FAQs

  • Yoga is a practice that originated in India over 2,500 years ago. Written in Sanskrit, the ancient texts describe it as a practice that will still the turbulence of mind that will, over time and with practice, create greater calm, contentment and mental clarity. There are many ways in which Yoga can be practised to achieve this. In the Western world this usually involves a physical practice. By putting the body in various poses (asanas) and bringing awareness to breath, Yoga will quieten the body and mind.

  • Although there are spiritual elements to yoga, yoga is not a religion and does not require you to subscribe to any particular set of beliefs. It will however help you to think about your way of life and enable you to leave with greater peace and calm.

  • All of our classes are for all levels of experience and flexibility. Just come with an open mind. As long as you show up and do your best, you’ll benefit from yoga. However, if you prefer to start with a slower paced class then you may wish to start with our Forrest, Foundations, Gentle, Restorative or Yin classes. Our hot classes are definitely more intense, so you may prefer to start with the downstairs studio or classes with lower heat upstairs. For further information on the classes we offer, please visit our ‘Classes’ page.

  • One of the many benefits to attending yoga classes is to improve both your flexibility and fitness. You are your own best teacher when it comes to practising yoga, so please always listen to your body, work around your own abilities and not beyond them and try not to worry too much about what the person on the mat next to you is doing. Regular practice of yoga poses or asanas will increase stamina, strength and flexibility, helping you feel happier and healthier in body and mind! In short: yoga is for everyone, wherever we are on our own individual journeys.

  • Don’t worry. One of the founding principles of Asha Yoga is that yoga should be accessible for all people irrespective of experience.

  • Private classes are available to all our students. We find new students can benefit both in terms of confidence and knowing the basics from starting off with a few one-on-one with a teacher and are then ready and confident to attend regular classes. But working one-on-one is also a great way to delve into the unique needs of your practice with a teacher.

We can organise these to take place at the studio (schedule permitting) or at a time and place of your choice. We charge $85 for one-on-one privates at the studio, group rates depend on teacher and group size . Please email the studio with any questions and to book. ashayoga108@gmail.com

  • No! We have 2 studios. Studio F5 (upstairs) is heated from 75° to 110° with Infrared Heaters. Studio F10 (downstairs) is kept at a comfortable room temperature.

  • It is natural for many to struggle with the heat at first, but your body will quickly adapt.

Practising in a hot environment brings many benefits, but it can also be very challenging, especially for beginners or people new to hot yoga. We recommend that you drink plenty of water throughout the day before your class to ensure healthy hydration levels. Bring water to classes to sip if and when you feel it’s necessary. A lack of hydration can exacerbate a drop in blood pressure and lead to feelings of dizziness. Whilst practising yoga in a heated environment, it is not uncommon to experience bouts of lightheadedness or dizziness. This is perfectly normal and experienced by many on occasion and is usually a result of a combination of the higher than normal temperature and the challenging postures whilst your body is working hard. If this should happen, there’s no cause for alarm! Breathe deeply and steadily and just sit or lie down on your mat. Try to stay in the room, and try to relax until you feel you are in a position to rejoin the class. If the dizzy spell lasts more than a few seconds, please discreetly notify the teacher.

  • The heat allows for many added benefits – such as optimising blood circulation, enabling deeper stretching and typically burning more calories than in a non-heated environment. The presence of heat also has a massaging effect on deep tissues, muscles and organs, helping to improve their functioning and eliminate toxins. Through raising your heart rate, hot yoga classes also help in strengthening your cardiovascular system. The heat will make you sweat, which offers further benefits. It helps open, unclog and cleanse pores, leading to a healthier, cleaner, more radiant and younger looking skin! Sweating can also strengthen our immune system and detoxify the body, flushing the body of substances such as alcohol and cholesterol and dangerous viruses. A natural antibiotic is activated in sweat. It’s also an effective way of sweating out salt and retaining calcium in our bones. This limits the accumulation of salt and calcium in the kidneys and urine and so helps to prevent the formation of kidney stones. Additionally, the hot environment helps break down fatty acids and glucose adding even more benefits to your yoga practice.

  • First of all Congratulations! We would advise that you do not practise during your 1st trimester and that you should always consult your doctor before attending a class. In your 2nd and 3rd trimester you can join our pregnancy class. If you have an existing practice and no complications in your pregnancy and are in your second trimester there are a number of “pregnancy-friendly” classes you may attend. Please email us in advance before doing so.

If you would like to attend other classes please email the studio about your pregnancy, yoga experience and which classes you would like to attend. We will then check in with our teachers and confirm if they are ok for you to attend.

Please reach out to us if you have further questions or would prefer private prenatal classes. We look forward to seeing you in class.

  • That depends. What did your doctor/physical therapist/provider say?

While we'd like to tell you that yoga will always heal you, we simply can't make those kinds of promises. Many students find yoga to be a helpful resource for injury management but it depends on the specifics and severity. Please consult with your doctor/physical therapist/bodyworker and let your teacher know what is going on so that we can work out any necessary modifications for class.

We are here to help, but we are not qualified to diagnose any injuries or illness, so your physician and your own intuition are the first lines of defence when practising with an injury.

Remember if you feel pain - trust your body above all - and be gentle with yourself. Slow and steady is best.

  • With practice, Yoga will improve your strength, flexibility, health and well-being. And your mind will stop weighing you down, surely that’s more important?

  • That depends! If you come once per week, you'll probably feel pretty good afterwards. If you come 2 -3 times per week, those good vibes will linger a little longer. 5 - 6 times per week and your yoga glow will become a permanent fixture.
